On Sunday (23 June) terrorists attacked two churches, a synagogue and a police post in Dagestan, Russia. A total of 9 people including a priest and 8 policemen were killed in this. 25 police personnel are also injured. At the same time, 4 terrorists have also been killed.
According to CNN, the terrorists slit the priest’s throat. The priest was 66 years old. The Jewish temple and church that were attacked are located in the city of Derbent in Dagestan, which is a stronghold of the Jewish community in the Muslim-dominated area of North Caucasus. While the police station that was attacked is in Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, 125 km away from Derbent.
Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee has also confirmed the attack in a statement. Dagestan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said that a group of armed men opened fire on a synagogue and a church. Four terrorists were killed in this. Some fled, who are being searched for.
It is being claimed in media reports that these people firing on the road were attackers who came wearing black clothes.
Jewish temple caught fire after the attack
According to Al Jazeera News Network, a synagogue and church in Derbent caught fire due to the terrorist attack. Its video also surfaced on social media. After the attack, the attackers were seen fleeing in a car. The terrorists also fired bullets at another Jewish temple. There was no one there at that time, due to which people’s lives were saved.
Russian news agency TASS reported that the attackers were members of an international terrorist organization. At present, no terrorist organization has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
A synagogue and a church in Derbent caught fire as a result of the attack, officials were quoted as saying.
Dagestan blamed Ukraine and NATO countries
Dagestan has blamed Ukraine and NATO countries for the attack. Dagestan’s leader Abdulkhakim Gadjiyev wrote on Telegram, ‘There is no doubt that these terrorist attacks are somehow connected with the intelligence services of Ukraine and NATO countries.
There has been no statement from Ukraine yet on the terrorist attack in Russia. President of neighbouring Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov said that what happened looks like a provocation and an attempt to sow discord through statements.
The attack in Dagestan , Russia is the second major terrorist attack this year.
Earlier, there was a terrorist attack in March, in which 143 people died. ISIS-K took responsibility for the attack. However, Russia accused Ukraine of being complicit in it. Putin became the President of Russia for the 5th time on March 18. The attack took place 5 days after that.
BBC quoted experts in its report and wrote that the attack was carried out by the Khorasan wing of ISIS i.e. ISIS-K. ISIS-K is named after the region that covers northeastern Iran, southern Turkmenistan and northern Afghanistan.
