Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met an American delegation that had come to meet Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama. During this, PM Modi also met former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Many meanings are being sought from this meeting between PM Modi and the American delegation.

Actually this is the first time that a foreign delegation is raising its voice in support of Tibet from Indian soil. However, Nancy had earlier come to India to meet the Dalai Lama in May 2017. However, Nancy Pelosi did not visit India with any delegation then.

It is worth noting that India considers Tibet to be a part of China and has refrained from commenting on it. No information has been received yet as to whether this visit of the US delegation is official or not.

On Wednesday, the US delegation said that the US will not allow China to interfere in the Dalai Lama’s ‘succession’ issue. In fact, China wants to place its ‘Dalai Lama’ on the highest post of Tibetan religious leader.

A bill related to Tibet passed in America on June 12
A bill related to Tibet, ‘The Resolve Tibet Act’ was passed in America on June 12. Joe Biden is yet to sign it. This act supports Tibet and is in favor of increasing dialogue between China and the Dalai Lama without any conditions.

China threatened America.
China’s reaction came in April regarding this bill. China said that Dalai Lama is a separatist and America should recognize his anti-China attitude. China warned that if America goes back on its old promise of not considering Xizang (Tibet) as a part of China, then China will respond to it in a strong manner.

China’s stance on Tibet changed after the Communist government came to power

The dispute between China and Tibet is years old. China calls Tibet its ‘Xizang’ province. According to China, Tibet has been a part of China since the thirteenth century and hence it has the right over Tibet. However, Tibet rejects this claim of China.

In the year 1912, the religious leader of Tibet and the 13th Dalai Lama declared Tibet an independent country. At that time China was weak so it could not protest. After about 40 years, when the Communist government came to power, China occupied Tibet.

Due to the expansionist policies of this government, China attacked Tibet with thousands of soldiers in 1950. China’s occupation of Tibet continued for about 8 months.

Finally, in 1951, Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama signed a 17-point agreement. After this agreement, Tibet officially became a part of China. However, Dalai Lama does not accept this treaty. He says that this treaty was signed under pressure.

Dalai Lama fled from Tibet and came to India amid dispute with China

Meanwhile, anger against China started increasing among the Tibetan people. After 1955, violent protests against China started happening all over Tibet. During this time, the first rebellion took place in which thousands of people lost their lives. In March 1959, the news spread that China was going to take the Dalai Lama hostage. After this, thousands of people gathered outside the Dalai Lama’s palace.

Eventually, the Dalai Lama fled from Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, disguised as a soldier and reached India. The Indian government gave him asylum. China did not like this. It is said that this was also a major reason for the India-China war of 1962. The Dalai Lama still lives in India. The Tibetan government in exile runs from Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh.

Elections are also held for this government. Tibetan refugees from all over the world vote in the elections. Refugee Tibetans have to register to vote. During the elections, Tibetans elect their president who is called ‘Sikyong’. Like India, the tenure of the Parliament there is also 5 years. The headquarters of the Tibetan Parliament is in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh.

Only those Tibetans have the right to vote and contest elections who have a ‘Green Book’ issued by the ‘Central Tibetan Administration’. This book serves as an identity card.
